Maybe you saw the movie or read the book, but you can see history up close here. The Delta Museum Mile is a unique and diverse collection of Greenville’s museums, all located near one another. You can see it all, from Pre-Columbian treasures to antique fire trucks, original manuscripts and World War II and Cold War memorabilia, artifacts from Delta Bluesmen and the world’s most famous frog, Kermit. There’s something wonderful for every member of the family to see.
Muppet creator Jim Henson was born in Greenville and raised in Stoneville, just west of Leland. As a child, he spent hours playing along the banks of Deer Creek. It was here that Henson dreamed of and created the character of Kermit the Frog. A visit to Kermit’s birthplace is filled with the fun and creativity of Jim Henson and all his Muppet friends. The exhibit building also operates as a Washington County Welcome Center.
The Great River Road parallels the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Louisiana. In similar grand tradition, our state Welcome Center resembles the Victorian riverboats that once ruled the Mighty Mississippi. This unique structure originally served as the State of Mississippi Exhibit in the 1984 New Orleans World’s Fair. Today it’s also home to unique Delta exhibits, including a famous frog and our nationally renowned writers. Stop in and stay a while as you learn about all the amazing sights and sounds Washington County and the great state of Mississippi have to offer. The River Road Queen Welcome Center hosts many special events during the year.
